Two-day Introduction to Cognitive Analytic Therapy

This two-day introduction to Cognitive Analytic Therapy is being run by the NTW CAT Service, Division of Specialist Services, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust.  The trainers will be Anna Jellema, Sally-Anne Ennis and Steve Clarke.

CAT is an integrative and time-limited psychological therapy which is fast-growing in the NHS. It is a collaborative and user-friendly form of treatment. CAT has been developed by Dr Anthony Ryle since the late 1970’s as a way of treating and managing NHS patients with a wide variety of mental health problems and personality disorders. There is growing demand for training in CAT from nurses, psychologists, psychiatrists, therapists and counsellors, as well as from other health and social care professionals dealing with disturbed patients (including in primary care and physical health settings).

The NTW CAT Service has been offering the major professional qualification in CAT, the two-year ACAT-accredited CAT Practitioner Training, since 2004 (now validated by Sheffield Hallam University as a Postgraduate Diploma). We will be running our fourth intake of CAT Practitioner Training between April 2011 – March 2013.  Attending an Introductory Workshop run by ACAT-accredited staff is strongly recommended for potential Practitioner Training applicants, especially those who have not yet had any other training or clinical supervision in CAT, and is also suitable for professionally qualified staff who want to find out what CAT involves.

Our two-day Introductory Workshop aims to offer a basic understanding of the practice and theory of CAT; we will be using a mixture of presentations, small and large group exercises and case discussions. During the Workshop we will:

• Outline what CAT involves, for therapist and patient
• Explain how CAT understands psychological disturbance (including similarities and differences with other major models of therapy)
• Introduce participants to key CAT concepts and methods (such as procedures, reciprocal roles, reformulation letters and diagrams) and give some opportunities to put these into practice
• Show how CAT can be used to treat a variety of psychological and personality problems, and
• Discuss how patient disturbance can affect the wider team, plus how this can be managed using CAT methods.

Trainers: Anna Jellema (Consultant Clinical Psychologist, Head of NTW CAT Service) and Sally-Anne Ennis (Consultant Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapist) are both UKCP Registered Cognitive Analytic Psychotherapists, Accredited Supervisors with the Association for Cognitive Analytic Therapy (ACAT), and Core Course Trainers for the two-year NTW CAT Practitioner Training Course/Diploma. Steve Clarke (Psychotherapist) is a CAT Practitioner and Trainer and Accredited Supervisor with the CAT Service.

Early applications are advised as places are limited to 25, and our last courses were heavily over-subscribed. You need to be able to attend both days.
