Forthcoming Training

A Foundation Course in CAT Skills

This one-year course will equip trainees with CAT knowledge and skills for working with more complex patients in a primary care setting or patients with an equivalent level of complexity in other settings.

Within a primary care setting patients seeking help for common mental health problems often also present with traits of personality disorder, as well as with history of childhood sexual abuse and abandonment, and with relational challenges. CAT is well established as an effective intervention for these presentations. The course incorporates the recently published IAPT CAT competencies for working with Personality Disorder and will be suitable for IAPT High Intensity Therapists.

Applications are also invited from others with a core mental health profession and prior training in psychological therapies. This may include doctors in training, clinical psychologists and others keen to expand on their CAT skills within their existing practice.

The course is comprised of:

||          Eleven training days (spread over the year)

||          Four supervised CAT cases

||          One essay (2500-3000 words)

||          One case-study (4000 words)

||          One personal development session on the use of self in clinical work (minimum 3 hours)

Application is being made to ACAT to accredit the course as an ACAT Skills Certificate course and for it to carry future foundation year credit (in lie with ACAT strategy) towards the further training, clinical experience and personal therapy necessary for accreditation as an ACAT accredited CAT Practitioner.
