The aim of this seminar is to become more aware of how the neurosciences can inform and deepen our practice of psychotherapy within the CAT model for creating the conditions for processing unmanageable or traumatized states of self and enabling further integration.

I will be using practical exercises within a guiding framework, case examples, discussion of application to participants’ current clients, and some summary handouts and slides on key information and concepts, with the aim to:

  • Establish the conditions and resources for adaptive processing of experiences and the freeing up and containment of the flow energy and information for this.
  • Identify and work with different self-states or parts of the self and establishing or strengthening an adult perspective, or “adult, lead self-state”
  • Use information on the neuropsychology of mental health and wellbeing, trauma and disorder, and therapeutic change processes at different moments in a therapy, to help us inform and guide our clients so that they understand both the experiences that bring them to therapy and the processes of change.
  • Integrate these practices and processes into CAT as a collaborative, humanistic and integrative therapy that uses the relationship in all its aspects.
  • Adapt the role of the therapist for different processes at different stages and for clients with different problems, disorders and capacities or ZPD. This includes integrating the CAT uses of dialogue and relationship with sessions more focused on the client’s internal self-to-self processes. These can be for establishing skills and resources, for processing and integrating experience and for consolidation. In an introductory workshop these will be discussed in a general sense. The work of Allan Schore and Janina Fisher will be referred to here.

John Bristow, CAT psychotherapist, supervisor and trainer for over 20 years. Since March 2016 I have updated my knowledge of neurobiology applied to psychotherapy for varying degrees of trauma, through reading, training and supervised practice. Since its formation in March 2016, I have been an active member of the CAT Special Interest Group (SIG) on CAT and the neurosciences, CAT and the Embodied Mind, which has merged with the CAT, Trauma and EMDR group.  We run seminars or learning groups and share learning resources within ACAT.
