3pm – 3:45pm The impact of COVID-19 on a Tier 3 Specialist Adult Eating Disorder Service: how the service adapted, clients were supported and staff well being was considered, within a CAT framework - Dr Samantha Sharpe

Session 1 - The Covid Struggles List and the development of CAT tools for team reflection

“The Covid Struggles List” is a list of common struggles that we found ourselves encountering in our work with mental health staff early in the pandemic.  It describes in CAT-informed terms the states of mind and the dilemmas that the pandemic seemed to elicit, inspired by Steve Potter’s “Helpers Dance List”.  This talk will introduce the list, describe its development, use and dissemination, and share some finding from an evaluation.  The list seemed to strike a nerve with the wider mental health community and the talk will give us a chance to explore these kinds of questions: What can CAT thinking bring to the understanding of problematic work experiences, especially in a time of crisis?  How can CAT tools best be developed to support reflective practice in teams and organisations?  The pandemic threw us all into hard-to-manage states, and what proved helpful was not problematizing those experiences, but recognising our shared struggles.  Ryle’s idea of “close, accurate description” as a route to validation and solidarity has something useful to offer us in this context.
