Working with Sexual Issues in Cognitive Analytic Therapy

Heather Wood | CAT Therapist, Trainer and Supervisor

Date:     Friday 7 November, 2014
Venue:  Group Room, S2, Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge CB2 2QQ
Time:    10.30am to 4.30pm
Cost:      £60 for the day (online bookings) Please note that lunch is not included

People’s concerns about their sexuality may be evident from the outset in therapy, or they may emerge in the course of the work.  Very often these are issues about which the client may feel anxiety, shame and embarrassment, but clinicians may also feel uncomfortable about addressing these concerns.  The aim of the workshop is to build people’s confidence in working with these issues.  The one day workshop will explore what language to use, ways of thinking about different presentations, counter-transference feelings that may get in the way, and the contribution of a CAT framework in (re)formulating different presentations.  In the final part of the workshop Heather Wood will present a framework for thinking about compulsive and illegal use of internet pornography, since this problem is increasingly encountered in therapeutic practice.

Biography:
Dr Heather Wood is a Clinical Psychologist, a CAT Practitioner and Supervisor, and a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist.  After working for many years in generic NHS outpatient psychological therapies services, 11 years ago she moved to work as a Consultant Adult Psychotherapist at the Portman Clinic, Tavistock and Portman NHSFT, where she has specialised in working with people with problems with internet pornography and paedophilia, and has published widely on these subjects.  She continues to use CAT in her private practice and private supervision, and has a particular interest in bridging psychoanalytic and CAT perspectives, using each to inform the other: the psychoanalytic perspective brings a richness of thinking about sexuality, while CAT offers focus and clarity of formulation.

This day is aimed at:  clinicians who are regularly using CAT in their work but it is suitable for anyone with a CAT or psychodynamic therapy background and from any professional discipline.
