Date:   Friday, 28th November 2014
Time:   9:30am to 4:30pm
Venue: Manchester
Fee:     £95 - ACAT members   ::  £120 - non-ACAT members
[The early bird rate has now closed].

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

The workshop will be of interest to:   CAT therapists and non-CAT therapists if they have an understanding of CAT basics and use some CAT tools.

Workshop overview:
This workshop will appeal to psychological therapists who are aware that their practice would benefit from a greater understanding of key neuropsychological processes. It will improve your practice when working with adults who have acquired cognitive impairments regardless of aetiology (e.g. linked to depression, anxiety disorders, head injury, dementia) and those which are a mixture of the two (e.g. trauma in early childhood).

Objectives:

  • To explore our views about the brain in a relational therapy – what does it mean to us?
  • To raise awareness of basic brain architecture and cognitive functions
  • To increase participants’ awareness of the cognitive impact of both mental health and organic problems
  • To introduce cognitive domains vulnerable to emotional and neurological difficulties including attention; memory and executive functioning.
  • To explore reciprocal roles and procedures which may particularly present in people cognitively affected
  • To consider implications of neuropsychological insights for working with CAT tools, including reformulation and mapping.

Outcomes:

  • Appreciation of the brain and impact on therapy, regardless of our client population
  • Increased knowledge of what affects cognitive functioning
  • Knowledge of how cognitive difficulties may present in assessment and therapy
  • Familiarity with some strategies likely to maximize learning and processing in therapy
  • Discussion and exploration of the implications of neuropsychology for your own CAT or therapy practice

About the facilitators:
Dr Emma Taylor began her career as a lecturer in psychology at Guys Medical School and for the Open University. She is a Clinical Psychologist and CAT therapist with 25 years of clinical experience now working independently. She worked for 12 years in the NHS, within adult and older adult mental health services. She has extensive knowledge of assessing and working with people with dementia. Most recently, she has worked in hospital and community settings with adults with acquired brain injury and other neurological diseases. In addition, she has personal experience of living with neurodevelopmental and specific learning disorders. Emma has taught on the University of East London and Sheffield Doctorate in Clinical Psychology courses (DClinPsy), including on CAT, and delivered training for many other health professionals.

Dr. Pete Walpole is a Clinical Psychologist working in the Clinical Neuropsychology Department at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield. Pete has almost twenty years’ professional experience of adult mental and physical health settings. He trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy in the mid-late 1990s, before completing his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology in 2005. He has a Post-doctoral Diploma in Adult Clinical Neuropsychology, and is in the final stages of the British Psychological Society’s Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology. He has taught on the Trent DClinPsy course in the past, and has been providing teaching on the Sheffield DClinPsy course and elsewhere in the NHS for the past eight years. In his current role, he specialises in the neuropsychological differential diagnosis of dementias, and the diagnostic assessment of people exhibiting cognitive problems that have no clear organic basis at the time of referral.

NB This workshop focuses on acquired rather than developmental cognitive difficulties.
