News from ACAT North

CAT Practitioner Training
Interest in CAT training continues in the North and we are advertising for an intake in October 2003. This will be our fourth consecutive annual intake and we expect this to continue. There are around 17 trainees in each year. We would welcome hearing from ACAT members interested in working as seminar group leaders/mentors for trainees and training therapists. Therapists willing to travel to ‘us’ to offer therapies would be helped to manage the logistics.

Skills Level Training in Complex Mental Health Issues
Ian Kerr, Debby Pickvance and Glenys Parry in Sheffield, helped by other ACAT members are due to run this course to a second group of generic mental health workers in Sheffield. The first course, aimed to develop psychologically-informed work by whole teams was well received. This work was commissioned for four Community Mental Health Teams in Sheffield. (See page 25 for further information.)

Skills Level training for staff in an in-patient setting
Dawn Bennett assisted by other ACAT North members and recent graduates is running a similar generic skills course aiming towards CAT-informed case management for a group of 12 in-patient nurses in Blackburn.

CAT Research
Glenys Parry and Renate Pentke (Research Clinical Psychologist) in Sheffield consulted ACAT members and developed a discussion paper outlining the purpose, structure and implementation of an ACAT practice research network. This will be presented shortly as a proposal to ACAT, to include costings and some strategic issues, which can be discussed by Council. (See page 28 for further details.)

The Continuing Professional Development events organised by Sarah Lucas, Rachel Pollard and Mark Dyer continue to be well received and attended.
