Clinical Applications of Bakhtin in CAT – Dialogism in Action

A practical one-day workshop that aims to bridge the meaning gap between the theory of dialogism and clinical practice in CAT

Overview / aims

Do you ever find yourself baffled by Bakhtin or unclear what dialogism means in real terms for your CAT practice?

This hands-on workshop will use practical resources and creative methods to help demystify the theory and offer some helpful tools and ideas that can enrich your clinical practice.

Workshop outline (learning outcomes)

  • To offer a lively refresher of dialogism and the dialogic self – what this means and building understanding of the rich Bakhtinian concepts that underpin this.
  • Joining a “community of voices” by sharing experiences and engaging in dialogue together.
  • Presentation of case material illustrating examples of dialogic ways of working.
  • To consider how jointly creating and using shared signs can deepen the work of therapy and allow for a reparative experience (recognition and revision).
  • Exploration of how these often elusive-seeming ideas can be incorporated into your own therapy work in real practical terms.
  • Time to experiment through use of role-play and small group work to try out new ways of working and practice the different techniques.
  • Encouragement to consider how to build your own practical resources and take forward your learning from the day.
