ACAT News - North-East

At last we are able to offer a CAT Practitioner Training Course based in Sunderland! Sally-Anne Ennis arrived from London in March and has been hard at work on our curriculum, which was approved by the Training Committee in June. We’ve also had good support in setting up the Course from many other people, including the CAT Hartlepool group, ACAT North, other ACAT members who are running Practitioner Courses around the country, and especially from the Sunderland Adult Psychology Department which has allowed plenty of time to get this off the ground (it’s taken a full ten years from scratch!)

We have managed to persuade our organisation, South of Tyne and Wearside Mental Health NHS Trust, to host the course and we aim to start in January 2004 (with the next intake likely to be in 2006). Our advert has just been sent out locally, and we expect to interview in October/November. We should be able to offer around 12 places to public sector staff. About half the trainees will be from the three Localities of the Trust and will be non-fee paying, while the others are likely to be drawn from local professionals who are already in CAT supervision with us. If there are spare places available we would like to give preference to other candidates from the North-East and Scotland, so that we can gradually build up more of a “critical mass” in these regions which have suffered in the past from a scarcity of therapeutic trainings.
