This workshop aims to help colleagues by usefully summarising information they may have felt bombarded with, providing an informative historical perspective and helping to integrate this with our individual working with patients.
To understand the basics of the epidemiology of coronavirus and the public health threat it presents.
To explore what we can learn from history about the mental health impact of similar human experiences.
To examine the current data on the impact of the pandemic on mental health in the general population, health care workers and those with mental health problems.
To explore potential positives for society and individuals
To help therapists integrate the global and the individual experience by discussing vignettes, key themes and our own experiences.
I have worked in mental health since 1991 when I began training as a psychiatrist at Guy’s Hospital, London. Inspired by Anthony Ryle’s supervision of junior doctors I trained in CAT between 1996 and 2000 when I moved to Leeds. Under the guidance of Lawrence Welch I qualified as a supervisor and began some training in CAT. I worked in psychological medicine in Leeds and Hull until 2010 since when I have been working in private practice and as a tutor at Leeds University.
