An Introduction to Cognitive Analytic Therapy
A two-day course for mental health professionals

Friday 9th and Saturday 10th June 2017

Conference Room 2, East Brighton Community Mental Health Centre, Brighton General Hospital, Brighton

9.30am – 5.00pm

Overview

This course will provide participants with an introduction to the theory and practice of cognitive analytic therapy (CAT).

Who should attend?

This course would be of interest to mental health professionals who want to incorporate CAT concepts and tools into their therapeutic work with individuals or groups. It would also be useful for those considering whether to apply for a two year CAT Practitioner Training Course.

Course Aims

  • To introduce course members to the theory and practice of CAT
  • To understand key concepts used in CAT, including reciprocal roles, dilemmas, snags and traps and reformulation
  • To explore the use of CAT tools in therapeutic practice, including the psychotherapy file, therapeutic letters, diagrams and goodbye letters
  • To consider current applications of CAT in the NHS
  • To look at endings in brief, time-limited therapeutic interventions through the lens of CAT theory
  • To plan with participants ways in which aspects of CAT could be introduced into, or adapted for, their own clinical practice

About the course presenters

Elisabeth Mason – Elisabeth is a clinical psychologist working in the NHS and with a small private practice. She is a CAT therapist, supervisor and trainer and also trained in systemic practice. In her NHS work she works with people experiencing severe and complex mental health difficulties, where she uses CAT in psychological therapy and in team consultation and supervision. She is part of the course team for the local CAT practitioner course.

Dahlia Maslin - Dahlia worked for the NHS, in tertiary and secondary mental health care, for 19 years and was accredited as a Cognitive Analytic Therapist in Feb 2015.  Between 2005 and 2016 she worked full time as a Community Mental Health Nurse. Dahlia used her understanding of CAT principles and techniques to inform her ‘everyday work’ as care coordinator, to support clients to reformulate and recognise their own relational patterns, sometimes this would be about their relationships with ‘help’ and services.  Dahlia also found CAT an invaluable tool in Supervision (both giving and receiving). Since being accredited, she was able to dedicate one day a week to the practice of CAT (1:1 and co-conducting the open CAT group with Dr Jane Blunden).  Since September 2016, Dahlia has been in private practice and teaches on a freelance basis.
