The relational understanding and attentive curiosity of the CAT model invites us to think about the dynamics alive in organisations, and particularly ‘helping’ organisations. The ‘one third rule of thumb’ (Potter, 2014) positions individual CAT work and the dynamics of the ‘helpers dance’ within the organisational context. This includes the system, model, context or surrounding culture and how these might influence the experience and procedures of a helping encounter. This session focuses on the organisational context for much of CAT work, particularly in NHS organisations, and aims to explore the dynamics as the systems and cultures around therapeutic work are shifting. Much of this is felt but can be difficult to think about and articulate, especially in managerial contexts, or when there is a complexity of working and commissioning relationships.
This session will introduce ways of thinking about health care organisations from a psychological perspective. Beginning with Menzies-Lyth’s classic paper (1960) about the anxieties and social defences within a hospital with the task of looking after ill and dying people, a systems psychodynamic approach will be outlined. In 1996 Susan Walsh offered a CAT perspective of organisational dynamics, again looking at working life in a district general hospital. Linking theory and practice, participants will have the chance to explore the dynamics in their own organisation - at team, organisational and commissioning levels, in order to make sense of and digest the impact of the organisational ‘third’ on their working life and relationships.

Presenter
Robyn Vesey is an accredited Cognitive Analytic Therapist and Supervisor, with a background in Clinical Psychology. She held a managerial role as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and now works as an Organisational Consultant at Tavistock Consulting, at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation Trust. Robyn has previously written about the impact of the changes in the NHS on CAT therapy services (Reformulation 2012) and completed an MA in Management and Organisational Dynamics at the University of Essex in 2013. Her dissertation focused on some of the psychological dynamics in customer, or purchaser, relationships, which are now present in the NHS. She is interested in both systems psychodynamic and CAT thinking about organisational life with a view to promoting containment and organisational health, whilst acknowledging the realities of power, access to and control over resources, and the feelings evoked by these realities.
