Information Sheet

ICAT Training Course Application Practitioner Training in CAT
(Awarded by ICAT)

November 2013 to June 2015

CAT is a brief, typically 16-24 session model of psychotherapy applicable to a wide range of mental health difficulties. CAT evolved from an integration of concepts and practices from personal construct theory, cognitive therapy and psychoanalytic object relations theory. However CAT offers a unique theory that includes a radically social concept of self.

The practice of CAT involves a collaborative therapeutic relationship. Active participation assists the creation of a narrative and diagrammatic reformulation of a patient's difficulties. Maladaptive patterns originating from early childhood are identified and their repetition in current relationships and self management is explored. The effect of these patterns on the relationship between therapist and client ‘in the room’ is also worked with to enhance awareness, avoid collusion and assist change.
