The meeting, in its inspiring, welcoming and fully accessible location, is open to all CAT trainers and supervisors, including trainee supervisors (to whom we extend a very warm invitation), and also to members of ACAT’s committees. The aim of each of these annual meetings has been to create and maintain a space for a reflective dialogue so that we can monitor and develop the key role of supervisors and trainers in developing CAT practice in all its variety.
We will be looking at CAT in 2020 and how CAT is adapting to the needs of today’s society and mental health services and to the changing needs of the people we see. We plan to explore our collective understanding of the current state of CAT as a coherent modality and to think about the core CAT tools and their modes of delivery – individual, couple, group, consultancy, contextual CAT, CAT in IAPT and CAT reflective practice. How are CAT tools adapted to the different forms of CAT and different patient groups? New CAT tools and briefer forms of Individual and Group CAT are being invented, with or without reformulation. Can you reformulate without a prose letter and if so, how is the narrative created and witnessed in other forms of Individual and Group CAT? As part of the exploration Jason will be presenting the Somerset 8-session CAT in IAPT model and describe adaptations to the model used in different forms of Group CAT across the world, including open CAT groups. We will create the opportunity for skills exchange within the training group so we can learn from the richness of each other’s experience.
We have two items on the programme to follow on from this: there will be a presentation from Steve Kellett on the recent case matched trial of CAT (8) vs CBT (16) in IAPT and secondly Dawn Bennett will present an overview of the new CAT Competences Framework (as recently uploaded at: https://www.ucl.ac.uk/pals/research/clinical-educational-and-health-psychology/research-groups/core/competence-frameworks). We will be thinking about how this outcome of the long-term collaboration of ACAT with the UCL CORE project will inform our courses and the benchmarking of trainee assignments and appraisals in supervision.
Over the course of these two days we will have an opportunity to review the training videos which Catalyse have commissioned and which will can made available to CAT Courses.
We will focus on these issues with a peer led programme that offers a mix of presentations, debate, discussion, group activity - but most importantly the opportunity to share our knowledge and skills with each other and learn from each other. We will endeavour to reach a consensus statement or action plan regarding each of the topics we discuss over these two days.
In addition, there will be space for topics for discussion suggested by delegates. Attendees are therefore invited to consider in advance any areas that they wish to discuss with their peers relevant to CAT training and supervision.
