Pembroke College, University of Oxford, OX1 1DW

From 12 noon on Monday to 4.30pm Tuesday

The Trainers’ and Supervisors’ meeting, in its inspiring, welcoming, and accessible location at Pembroke College, Oxford, is open to all CAT trainers and supervisors, including trainee supervisors to whom we extend a very warm invitation, and to members of ACAT’s committees.  The aim of each of these annual meetings has been to create and maintain a space for a reflective dialogue so that we can monitor and develop the key role of supervisors and trainers in developing CAT practice in all our practice.

This year we are delighted to welcome CAT trainers and supervisors and trainee supervisors to Pembroke College. We have all experienced changes arising from the disruption of the pandemic.  We hope to make space to share this and reflect on the adaptations which have emerged in the therapeutic space. We recognise our experiences and procedures, on our use of self in CAT and how we develop, maintain, and nurture our clinical skills for ourselves and others through our trainings, teaching, and supervision. Arising from these reflections, the focus for our discussions this year will be:

The challenge of empathic containment with complex relational emotions.

What is carried? What do we hold onto? What has to be let go of?

What is the role of CAT supervision?

Delegates will have the opportunity to discuss and explore relational experiences that may be challenging in CAT therapy and supervision. We will take time to consider when the use of self in therapy becomes too much and feels out of the therapist’s control and identify therapeutic responses that enable these complex emotions to be understood and brought into dialogue within the ZPDs of the client / therapist / supervisor.

Some of the themes likely to arise are:

  • How do we support trainees to be present in the face of challenging emotions and powerful projective identification?
  • How do we facilitate openness and shared ownership of dynamic processes in group supervision?
  • How can we be emotionally challenging, congruent, and thoughtful with each other?
  • How do we model self-protection and self-care in our professional roles as therapists and as supervisors?

We will provide a more detailed programme and suggested reading to registered delegates at the beginning of March. We look forward to seeing you in Oxford.

Jason Hepple and Yvonne Stevens
